Maine Set to Host Pair of Non-Conference Opponents

Sept. 15, 2005

Maine will look to continue their winning ways after an impressive 2-1 win over UMass last Saturday in their home opener. Senior forward Adam Chenault (Maineville, Ohio/Kings) and freshman striker Kyle Pacheco (Smithfield, Rhode Island/LaSalle Academy) scored the Black Bear goals with senior forward Gabriel Germano (Ste. Foy, Quebec/F.X. Garneaux) tallying his first assist on the year. Senior goalkeeper Chad Mongeon (Essex Junction, Vermont/Essex) made two saves on three shots to preserve the victory.

Last year, Sacred Heart knocked off Maine 2-1 in Connecticut with Maine needing two overtimes to earn the win over the Jaspers, 3-2 in a thriller.

SCOUTING THE PIONEERS The Sacred Heart Pioneers (1-3-0) come into Friday's game with the Black Bears riding a three-game losing streak. The Pioneers opened the season with a 1-0 win over Bowling Green at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay Nike Classic. Since then the Pioneers have lost to Wisconsin Green Bay 2-1, Providence 2-0, and Holy Cross 3-1. Freshman forward Jason Tessitore leads Sacred Heart in scoring with two goals in four games with freshman forward Luke Gagliardi adding one goal on the season.

Goalkeeper Matthew Jones has started all four games for Sacred Heart. Jones has a 1.75 goals against average, a .788 save percentage, and has made 26 saves on the year.

Newly appointed head coach Joe Barroso has high aspirations for the season with a core group of veteran players returning plus the addition of 15 new freshman. Barraso resigned from the women's program to take over when longtime coach Joe McGuigan resigned at the end of last season. Barroso, in his second stint at SHU after leaving for five years to coach at the University of Bridgeport, coached the Pioneer women's team for eight seasons and compiled a 71-66-5 record. He returned to help the Pioneers make the transition to Division I and guided the program to three-straight Northeast Conference Tournaments and its first-ever NCAA Division I Tournament.

SCOUTING THE JASPERS The Jaspers come into this weekend's game still looking for their first win. Manhattan College has opened the season with consecutive away losses at Adelphi (1-0), Philadelphia (2-1 OT), and at Long Island University (2-0). Last weekend, the Jaspers lost to New Jersey Institute (2-0), and Monmouth University (1-0) in the Soccerpost.com Classic in West Long Branch, New Jersey. The Jaspers continue their road trip with a Friday game at Central Connecticut State before visiting the Black Bears on Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore forward Josh Swett tallied Manhattan's only goal of the season, taking a pass from newcomer Bryan Knights. Junior goalkeepers Collin Leaver and Dashiell Parsons have shared the duties between the pipes. Leaver has started and played in one game with a 1.00 goals against average, and a .750 save percentage. Parsons has started three games and appeared in four with a 1.69 goals against average and a .781 save percentage.

Michael Swanwick begins his first season as the head coach of the men's soccer program. Swanwick, who directed Dominican College for the past five seasons, took over as the head men's soccer coach at Manhattan College this past January. In 2004, while at Dominican, he was named CACC coach of the year in 2004 after guiding the Dominican Chargers to a 15-6-1 mark, the conference title and the ECAC championship. Under Swanwick, Dominican also captured the conference crown in 2002, turning around a 3-17 team a season prior to his arrival.

On Friday, September 16th, the Black Bears (1-3-0) will host the Sacred Heart Pioneers (1-3-0) at 3:00pm and the Manhattan College Jaspers (0-5-0) on Sunday, September 18th at 1:30pm. Both games will be played at Alumni Field.
