Men's Soccer Still Looking for First Conference Win
Oct. 9, 2004
The Albany Great Danes defeated Maine 1-0 in America East Conference play on a beautiful afternoon at Memorial Field in Orono. Albany dominated play in the first half and outworked the Black Bears. Their hard work paid off in the 22nd minute when Stephan Hall scored off an assist from Lucas Machado. Hall made a great run and combined with Machado to get in behind the Maine defense where Hall hit a left footed shot just out of the reach of diving Black Bear keeper Chad Mongeon (Essex Junction, Vermont). At the end of the half, Albany had the edge with eight shots to Maine's three. Maine came out flying in the second half and dominated play. Albany's goalkeeper, Bouna Coundoul played a key role for the Great Danes as he attacked the ball off his line stifling many of Maine's crosses. Coundoul and a defender made three key saves to preserve the shutout and win for Albany. Senior captain Luke Rivard (Brunswick, Maine) looked to have a goal, but Coundoul dove to save Rivard's header received from junior Adam Chenault's (Maineville, Ohio) corner. A few minutes later, junior Kevin Forgett (Wilmington, Mass) thought he had equalized when he beat Condoul only to have an Albany defender clear the ball off the line. The last 15 minutes of the game was played in the Albany defensive third as Maine sent players forward and increased pressure. Maine missed some great scoring opportunities that were either just wide or blocked. The Black Bears outshot the Great Danes 11 to 2 and held the corner advantage five to zero in the second half. Maine plays University of Maryland at Baltimore County (UMBC) on Saturday, October 16th in America East Conference play.
