Maine and Northeastern Battle Ends in Tie

Oct. 6, 2004

Box Score

Orono, Maine - The Maine Black Bear's men's soccer team played Northeastern in it's home conference opener and battled to a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes. Both teams were very organized and gave up very few quality attacking chances in the first half. Maine had a slight shot advantage with 8 shots to the Huskies 5.

After a scoreless first half, both teams pressed on and tried to get in behind the oppositions defense. With 15 minutes to go junior Adam Chenault (Maineville, Ohio) broke the deadlock with a perfectly executed direct kick. Chenault took the direct kick, bent it around the wall and into the net for his 3rd goal of the season.

With seven minutes to go, Northeastern's Joe Parrish tied the game on a corner kick taken by Tom Heimreid. In the last five minutes Maine had two quality scoring chances but couldn't put the ball past the Huskies goalkeeper. Maine held the advantage in both overtime periods outshooting Northeastern. The second half of the second overtime was spent in the Northeastern end as Maine kept knocking on the door. Jimmy Velas (Falmouth, Maine), Kevin Forgett (Wilmington, Mass) and Justin Stockford (Foster, Rhode Island) all had chances to win the game.

With the tie, Maine moves to 3-3-3 and 0-1-2 in conference play while Northeastern moves to 2-5-3 and 1-0-2 respectively. Sergio Saccoccio made 9 saves for the Huskies, while Chad Mongeon (Essex Junction, Vermont) made five saves for the Black Bears.

Northeastern hosts Binghamton at 6pm while the Black Bears host Albany on YMCA Day this Saturday, October 9th with festivities starting at noon and kickoff at 1pm.
