Three Second-Half Goals Propel Maine to Victory

Sept. 18, 2005

Box Score

Orono, Maine - The Maine Black Bear's men's soccer team improved to 2-1 at home and 2-4-0 on the season with a convincing 4-1 victory over the visiting Jaspers of Manhattan College on Sunday afternoon. Senior captains Ben Wilcox (Essex Junction, Vermont/Essex) and Kevin Forgett (Wilmington, Mass./Beaver Country Day) led the way for the Black Bears. Wilcox netted two goals on the afternoon, with Forgett scoring his second of the season. Senior forward Adam Chenault (Maineville, Ohio/Kings) added a goal with junior back Jason Jacobe (Windham, Maine/Windham) tallying two assists, junior midfielder Cooper Friend (Ellsworth, Maine/Berkshire) and freshman back Ryan Kelley (Coventry, Rhode Island/LaSalle Academy) each recording their first assists on the year.

In the 28th minute, Wilcox put the Black Bears on the scoreboard to take the early 1-0 advantage. Friend served a ball in from a corner kick, where Jacobe knocked it to the back post for Wilcox to head in for his first goal of the year. Maine held a four to three shot advantage going into the break. Senior goalkeeper Chad Mongeon (Essex Junction, Vermont/Essex) made three saves to keep the one goal advantage for the Black Bears, while Jasper keeper David Mires made two saves on four shots.

Jasper forward Justin Shultz scored six minutes into the second half to change the complexion of the game and knot the score at 1-1. Manhattan's Joe Pumo earned the assist on the goal. Maine almost took the lead one minute later when Chenault broke in behind the Jasper defense only to hit the post. Chenault's follow up shot sailed wide. In the 62nd minute, Chenault put Maine up for good, 2-1, when Jacobe tallied his second assist of the game by flicking on another serve from Friend. Chenault timed his run perfectly and easily tucked the ball past a stranded Mires.

Six minutes later, Forgett sealed the game with a perfect ball played in by freshman Kelley. Mires timed the ball wrong and had the ball bounce over his head to a waiting Forgett who tapped in the ball to put Maine up 3-1. Three minutes later, Wilcox scored his second goal on the afternoon with a powerful header of a corner kick served in from Friend.

With the win, Maine moves to 2-4-0 while Manhattan remains winless with a 0-6-0 record. Mires finished with three saves on 14 shots in the loss, while Mongeon made five saves for the Black Bears on nine shots in the win.

The Black Bears travel to a pair of road games this week. Maine heads to Harvard for a Wednesday game at 3pm in Cambridge, Mass., then opens up conference play at Boston University on Saturday night at 7pm.
