Jan. 19, 2008 1.19.08 - OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Mid-America Christian University Evangels held off the Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals Saturday, Jan. 19. The Evangels outlasted the Chaps 70-58. "This is a good win for us," Head Coach Willie Holley said. "We struggled in the second half, but we played with composure and held on to the lead." The Evangels used a big first half to beat the Chaps. MACU held LCU to just 30% shooting overall and 16% from the three-point stripe. The Evangels out rebounded the Chaps 47-34. The Evangels jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first four points of the game. The Chaps responded by hitting a three-pointer, but that was the closest LCU would get to the lead. MACU went on a 16-5 run and stretched its lead to double digits at the 3:13 mark. The Evangels closed the first half on a 26-10 run. MACU was ahead at halftime, 41-17. LCU opened the second half on a 14-2 run, but MACU responded and built its lead to eighteen points mid-way through the second half. The Chaps cut the lead to ten points late in the game, but the Evangels held on for the win. Senior Donald Thorne had a big game for the Evangels, producing a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Senior Joe Brown scored 18 points, while Senior Stevan Thomas chipped in 11 points and six rebounds. The Evangels improved to 7-9 on the season, and 3-6 in SAC play. MACU will battle Jarvis Christian University at home Monday, Jan. 21.
