MACU Loses in SAC Play

1.17.08 - OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Mid-America Christian University Evangels lost in Sooner Athletic Conference play Thursday, Jan. 17, against the Wayland Baptist University Pioneers. The Evangels lost to the Pioneers 72-36.

"We struggled offensively tonight," Head Coach Willie Holley said. "They played a good defensive game and held us out of our offense."

The Evangels struggled from the field, shooting 21% from the field and 15% from the three-point line. The Pioneers forced 24 MACU turnovers, while committing 14 turnovers.

The beginning of the first half was back and forth, and at the 14:12 mark the game was knotted at 9-9. WBU's Lee Berend hit a three to break the tie, which started a 28-9 run to end the first half. The Evangels never responded and never trimmed the lead below ten points.

MACU went into the locker room down 37-18.

The Pioneers stretched their lead to twenty points on their first basket of the second half, and increased their lead throughout the game. The Evangels continued to struggle from the field, while WBU shot 40% from the three-point stripe.

Senior Donald Thorne had nine points and 11 rebounds. Senior Stevan Thomas chipped in five points and 10 rebounds.

The Evangels drop to 6-9, and 2-6 in SAC play.

MACU is back in action at home Saturday, Jan. 19 against Lubbock Christian University. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m.
