Jan. 12, 2008 1.12.08 - SHAWNEE, Okla. - The Mid-America Christian University Evangels used a Donald Thorne tip-in to prevail over the St. Gregory's University Cavaliers in Sooner Athletic Conference play Saturday, Jan 12. The Evangels squeaked by the Cavaliers 63-62. MACU went into a hostile environment and committed just nine turnovers. The Evangels outscored SGU 18-6 from behind the arc, and held the Cavaliers to just 14% shooting from the three-point stripe. MACU rallied late in the game, finishing the game on an 8-1 run. "I am proud of our guys," Head Coach Willie Holley said. "We were down most of the second half and it seemed that SGU had control, but we kept our composure and rallied to win the game." The Evangels came out of the gate on fire in the beginning of the first half. MACU jumped on the Cavaliers 11-4 in the first five minutes of the game. The remaining of the first half was back and forth with four lead changes. The Cavaliers went on a run late in the first half and took a 30-24 halftime lead. The Cavaliers held off the Evangels in the beginning of the second half, stretching their lead to 47-39 with thirteen minutes remaining in the game. MACU rallied and claimed its first lead of the second half at 51-50 with 6:52 left in the game. The Cavaliers responded and went on an 11-4 run to take the lead 61-55 with under four minutes left to play in the game. MACU would not allow another SGU basket as they went on an 8-1 run to close the game. Thorne put back a missed shot with 11.2 seconds left in the game and the Evangels stopped the Cavaliers on the ensuing possession and held on for the win. Thorne finished the game with 14 points and four rebounds. Senior Joe Brown contributed 12 points and four rebounds, while Junior Clint Nixon had 11 points and four assists. The Evangels improve to 6-8 on the season, and 2-5 in SAC play. MACU will be back in the Gaulke Activity Center Thursday, Jan 17 against Wayland Baptist University.
