Loyola's Three-Match Winning Streak Snapped By Detroit, 2-1, At Home

Oct. 14, 2005

CHICAGO, Ill. - Mary Parker and Kathy Banjavcic each recorded a goal and an assist to lead visiting Detroit past Loyola, 2-1, in Horizon League women's soccer action Friday at LU Soccer Park. With the win, the Titans improve to 6-3-4 (3-0-1 HL) on the season, while LU's record falls to 5-6-1 (1-2 HL). The loss also snaps Loyola's unbeaten streak at a season-best three matches.

Detroit took an early 1-0 lead in the seventh minute on a short four-yard shot from Banjavcic off a pass from Parker inside the 18-yard box past the Loyola defense. The Ramblers would come back to tie the contest at 1-1 on senior defender Jamie Wasielewski's (Joliet, Ill.) goal from three yards on the right side in the 35th minute of play. Sophomore defender Laura Heidenreich (St. Louis, Mo.) and junior forward Mary Dale (Freeport, Ill.) assisted on the score.

The score stayed the same throughout the second half until Banjavcic returned the favor to Parker and assisted on her game-winning goal in the 82nd minute to give UDM a one-goal lead until the final horn.

The Titans held the advantage in both shots (14-8) and corner kicks (4-3) for the match. Junior goalkeeper Emily Peick (Mendota Heights, Minn.) recorded five saves for the Ramblers, while Detroit goalie Katie Fortenberry tallied four saves.

"This was a tough loss with the score being tied in the final 10 minutes and both teams worked each other hard to get the win, LU head coach Frank Mateus said. "I knew that Detroit would play us tough today, but we had some great chances to pull out the win and they capitalized on their chance late in the match."

Loyola concludes its three-match homestand with a Horizon League match against Butler on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 11:30 a.m.
