No. 15 Marquette Knocks Off Loyola, 2-0

Sept. 20, 2005

Box Score

CHICAGO, Ill. - Loyola University Chicago women's soccer hosted nationally ranked Marquette in its first match tonight at Loyola Soccer Park, but the Golden Eagles proved their mettle and left Rogers Park with a 2-0 shutout victory. With the win, Marquette improves to 8-0-1 this season, while LU's record falls to 2-4.

The match was a defensive battle throughout the first half between both schools until MU's Alison Loughrin scored in the 42nd minute to give the visitors a 1-0 lead entering halftime with the assist coming from Michelle Pitzel. The second half was more of the same with Loyola looking for its opportunities of tying the score. Lauren Weber scored the Golden Eagles' second tally off a 35-yard free kick from Heather Goranson in the 76th minute to seal the match.

The Ramblers held the advantage in both shot attempts (13-8) and corner kicks (2-1) for the match. Sophomore forward Katie Heidenreich (St. Louis, Mo.) tallied five shots for the match, while junior goalkeeper Emily Peick (Mendota Heights, Minn.) recorded three saves in the first half for the Ramblers.

Next up for Loyola is a non-conference showdown against Illinois State in downstate Normal on Sept. 22 beginning at 4 p.m.
