Loyola remains the undefeated leader in the MIVA

    Chicago, Ill. (February 26, 2005) – The men’s volleyball team kept their No. 1 position in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association as they defeated the #14 Ohio State Buckeyes 3-1 (27-30, 30-20, 30-15, 30-26) in a packed Alumni Gym. The Ramblers are now 14-1, 8-0 MIVA.

    Leading the Ramblers in the attack this evening was senior Scott Greene with 21 kills, hitting .459, with one service ace, 13 digs and on block assist. Chris Kozlarek pitched in 13 kills, a team-high 3 service aces and four blocks (1 solo, 3 assist). James Grunst had 11 kills, hitting a team-high .474, and a game-high 7 blocks (1 solo, 6 assist). Krystian Krzyzak had a game-high 17 digs while Brian Guntli had a game-high 55 assists.

    The Buckeyes took game one, hitting .400 while holding the Ramblers to .351. Ohio State was ahead 15-10 helped by three service aces from Daniel Mathews. The Ramblers started to fight back with the help 2 consecutive kills by Grunst and another 2 by Kozlarek, but the Buckeyes would not give up the lead and would win 30-27.

    In game two the Ramblers came out to an early 11-5 lead. Ohio State’s Greaves and Mathews kept the Buckeyes into the game until Chris Kozlarek sealed the win in with 2 service aces. Game three the Ramblers came out strong hitting .611 while the Buckeyes fell to a -.200, easily taking the win 30-15.

    Game four was similar to game one with the Buckeyes taking the first lead and the Ramblers fighting to take it over. With the match tied 25-25, Loyola stepped up with Greene taking charge. Greene nailed two kills and Kozlarek added in three straight kills to seal the win 30-26.

    The Ramblers head to the UCSD Tournament in San Diego, CA to take on UC-Irvine, March 4 at 5:00 p.m. and UC-San Diego, March 5 at 8:00 p.m.
