Ramblers Complete Loyola Invitational Sweep with 3-0 Win Against Newman

The No. 11 Loyola University Chicago men's volleyball team compiled 51 kills on only 78 attempts as it swept Newman 3-0 in the second night of the Loyola Invitational on Saturday in Alumni Gym.

Loyola (9-3, 2-2 MIVA) was led in kills by 14 kills from Ian Anderson, the lone Rambler with double-figures in kills. Anderson had match-high honors for kills and added three digs and two blocks. Middle blocker James Grunst converted all five of his attack attempts for a 1.000 hitting mark in the match.

Setter Brian Guntli had a match-high 46 assists to lead the Ramblers in assists for the 12th straight match. Guntli also had a match-high eight digs and tied for the team-high mark with two blocks.

Loyola came out strong in game one, hitting .571 and holding Newman to a .000 mark. The Ramblers raced to a commanding 12-7 lead before another four-point run put the game out of reach for the Jets. The Ramblers led by as many as 12 in their 30-13 victory.

With the second game tied at eight, Loyola scored six consecutive points to take control of the game. Three kills by Anderson keyed the stretch. The Ramblers yielded a .226 hitting percentage to Jets but still held the advantage with a .429 mark.

The Ramblers finished off the match in impressive fashion by holding the Jets to a negative .080 hitting percentage in game three. Loyola allowed only five kills on 25 attempts (5-7-25) while tallying 15 of its own on 22 attempts for a .545 mark.

The Ramblers held a 9-2 advantage in service aces and a slight 5-4 lead in blocks over the Jets in the match.

Newman (3-5) was led by Jamaal Ferguson with seven kills and setter Kris Gupilan with 19 assists. The Jet's Kyle Fagan had a match-high three blocks.
