Loyola head coach Jim Whitesell announced the hiring of Steve Groothuis as coordinator of basketball operations

Steve Groothuis Named Coordinator of Men's Basketball Operations

July 16, 2007

CHICAGO - Steve Groothuis, who has spent the last two seasons as an assistant men's basketball coach at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas, has been named coordinator of men's basketball operations at Loyola University Chicago, head coach Jim Whitesell announced today.

"We are looking forward to having Steve on our staff," Whitesell said. "He brings with him a tremendous amount of energy and experience and is familiar with the Horizon League. He came highly recommended by all those that have worked with him. It is rare that you are able to find someone with this much experience and Steve has achieved success at all of his previous stops. "

In two seasons at St. Edward's under head coach Ryan Marks, Groothuis helped the team to a 45-15 record, including consecutive Heartland Conference titles and an appearance in the 2007 NCAA Division II Tournament. St. Edward's finished the 2006-07 campaign with a 24-6 ledger.

Prior to his stint in Austin, Groothuis worked for two seasons as an assistant coach under David Henderson at the University of Delaware. At Delaware, he was responsible for recruiting, scouting, player development workouts, coordinating study hall and operating video breakdown. He also served as a student assistant for the Blue Hens from 1999-2002.

Before heading to his alma mater, Delaware, Groothuis spent a year as the director of basketball operations at Youngstown State in 2002-03. At YSU, he coordinated film exchange and community involvement, while also managing the Penguins' basketball camps.

In addition to his coaching experience, Groothuis has also worked at numerous high-profile camps including the Duke University Basketball Camp, the University of Cincinnati Team Camp, the University of Indiana Team Camp, the North Carolina Basketball School and the Notre Dame Basketball Camp, among others.
