Loyola Rolls Over Wright State, 65-51

1/15/2005

Majak Kou scored 11 points off the bench as Loyola defeated Wright State, 65-51

CHICAGO (January 15, 2005) – Loyola University Chicago (4-12, 2-4 Horizon) dominated the boards, outrebounding Wright State (8-8, 3-2 Horizon), 39-23, as the Ramblers rolled to a 65-51 victory this afternoon at the Gentile Center. The victory snapped Loyola’s three-game losing skid. “This was a good team win and having DaJuan (Gouard) back gave our guys a huge lift in spirits,” Loyola head coach Jim Whitesell said. “I am very happy and thankful for the win.” Gouard suffered a knee injury at North Carolina on Dec. 12 and had been sidelined for the last seven contests, prior to today’s game. At the time of his injury, Gouard was leading the team in scoring with 12.9 ppg. Loyola built the lead early thanks to some hot shooting, as the Ramblers hit 52 percent of their shots en route to a 29-24 lead at the half. In the second half, Wright State closed the gap to four points, (32-28) with 17:47 left before a Blake Schilb basket sparked an 8-2 run that saw the Ramblers build the lead back up to double digits at 40-30. The Raiders managed to get as close as six at 49-43 with 8:34 remaining, but Gouard hit a three-pointer and Anthony Smith converted a pair of foul shots to increase the Loyola lead to 54-43 with 7:17 left. Wright State never got within single digits from that point forward and Loyola hit 9 of 10 free throws in the final four minutes to seal the victory. The Ramblers were led by Schilb’s game-high 16 points while Majak Kou (11) and Gouard (10) combined for 21 points off the bench. Tyrelle Blair added eight points, eight boards and four blocks as Loyola improved its record to 4-1 this season when holding its opponent to fewer than 60 points. Pierre Parker came off the bench to tie Blair with a team-high eight rebounds. Wright State was paced by 13 points from DaShaun Wood. Loyola looks for back-to-back victories for the first time this season when it hosts Detroit on Jan. 17 at 3 p.m.
