Ramblers to Compete at NCAA Mideast Regional
The Loyola University Chicago track and field program will send three student-athletes to compete in four different events at the NCAA Mideast Regional meet on May 25 and 26 at the Audrey J. Walton Track-Soccer-Field-Stadium in Columbia, Mo. Tom Andreoni (400-meter Hurdles) and Amanda Domich (5,000 and 10,000-meter races) qualified for the meet by winning titles at last weekend's Horizon League Championships while Marcia Faustin qualified with an automatic bid.
Faustin won her fourth consecutive Horizon League Outdoor title in the high jump with a 5-7.75 mark to become the first in league history to win four consecutive championships in the event and she also won the event four consecutive years in indoor competition. The Orland Park, Ill., native tied her personal-best high jump with a 5-8.75-effort at the Billy Hayes Invitational on May 4, 2007. Faustin also became the school-record-holder this season in both the 100 (12.37) and 200-meter dash (24.70) this season. "(Faustin) has been one of the best athletes to come through Loyola," head coach Rick Wemple. "It's exciting to see her qualify for regionals for the fourth straight year. After all she has done for our program with eight high jump titles and school records, she deserves this recognition." Domich won her second title of the meet with a 17:36.39 performance in the 5,000-meter race. Domich took a pair of titles in the 3,000 and 5,000 events at the indoor championships as well and now has six career Horizon League crowns in four years of indoor and outdoor championships. The Algonquin, Ill., native established personal bests this season in the 5,000-meter race (17:09.16) at the Penn Relays and the 10,000-meter race (35:34.10) at the Mt. Sac Relays. "(Domich) has had one of the best track and field seasons in women's distance running history," Wemple said. "She's really come into her own and is realizing her potential. To win the 5,000-meter race the day after racing the 10,000-meter is a difficult feat so I'm happy for her that she earned the opportunity to compete." Andreoni, a freshman hurdler from Oak Creek, Wis., won his first career Horizon League Championship with a personal-best effort of 54.11 in the final heat of the 400-meter hurdle race; the fourth-fastest time is Loyola history. Andreoni is the second Rambler to win the league title in the event and turned in another personal-best at the league championships with a 16.43 effort in the 110-meter hurdle race, which ranks as the sixth-best time is school history. "(Andreoni) came to Loyola with a reputation as an extremely hard worker," Wemple said. "The hard work he has put in has paid off. He wasn't the favorite to win the title in the 400-meter hurdle race but he put himself in that position through his work ethic and confident approach to racing." |
