Bisons battle but drop two

April 1, 2006

Box Score

Despite a valiant effort by both Bisons' starting pitchers, Lipscomb dropped both games of the double-header against the Kennesaw State Owls on Saturday, April 1.

Charles Williams got the game one start for the Bisons, his first. Williams came into Saturday's game leading the Bisons in ERA (1.57) and opposing batting average (.231).

The Owls got on the board first in the top of the second using an RBI sacrifice fly by Matthew Hopkins.

The Owls took advantage of an error by Bisons' shortstop Tadd Brewer in the fifth to increase their lead. Three unearned runs crossed the plate bringing the score to 4-0.

The Bisons cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the inning. With one out Whit Reed singled to center. David Becker followed with a single of his own putting runners on first and second with one out. Brewer hit the Bisons' third consecutive single of the inning to bring home the Bisons first run. Patrick O'Rourke followed with an RBI fielder's choice to bring the Bisons to within two.

The Owls added another run in the seventh to increase their lead to three runs. The Bisons would answer with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning on a home run by Whit Reed, but would come no closer. The Owls took the game 5-3 to increase their record to 14-13.

Williams received the loss despite allowing just two earned runs. In seven innings, he gave up five runs on ten hits and one walk. He struck out two.

Errors cost the Bisons again in a 3-2 game two loss.

Matt Schnelly received the game two start for Lipscomb. Schnelly came into the game with a 2-2 record and a 4.06 ERA.

Despite allowing three runs through the first three innings, Schnelly settled down to keep the Owls in check through the eighth inning.

However, the Bisons could only manage two runs against Owls' starter Dan Dale, neither of which were earned.

Both Bisons runs scored in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Nathan Sensing reached on an error. After Sensing stole second, Zac Miller hit an RBI single to center to bring home the first run. Ryan Mitchell followed with a single to put runners on first and second. David Becker brought the run home with a single of his own.

In eight innings, Schnelly gave up three runs, two earned, on seven hits. He struck out eight.

The Bisons take the field again on Sunday, April 2, when they conclude the three game series with Kennesaw State. Freshman right-hander Josh Smith is scheduled to make the 1 p.m. start for the Bisons.
