Sagat Named Region's Top Freshman

Nov. 27, 2006

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Lewis University outside hitter Stephanie Sagat has been selected as the Great Lakes Region Freshman of the Year, and junior setter Andrea Morrone has been named to the All Great Lakes Region honorable mention list.

Sagat, who last month was named Great Lakes Valley Conference Freshman of the Year, hit .273 this season with 3.26 kills, 2.84 digs, 0.36 blocks and 3.79 points per game. Her 3.77 kills per game and 4.34 points per game in conference play ranked first among league freshmen, as she helped the Flyers to a 14-2 GLVC record.

Sagat finished third on the team with 349 kills, and she reached 20 kills in match twice during the season. Her season high of 21 kills came against Missouri-St. Louis on Oct. 6. Sagat is the second Flyer in program history to be honored as the region's Freshman of the Year. Katie Gilman earned the honor following the 2000 season.

Morrone, who last month was named to the All-GLVC first team, finished second in the conference with a 12.32 assists per game average. She tallied 1,355 assists for the season and is now ranked second on the school's all-time list. Morrone set a career high with 59 assists against Indianapolis on Sept. 30 and then proceeded to collect 60 assists against Missouri-St. Louis on Oct. 6, and 62 assists against Southern Indiana on Oct. 13.

A first-time all-region selection, Morrone is the ninth Flyer in program history to be named to the all region team and the first since Katie Gilman in 2003.

The Flyers finished the 2006 season with a 25-6 record, capturing the team's first GLVC title in 14 years and making the program's seventh NCAA Tournament appearance.
