The evidence is mounting to show that Skip Steffey, now in his fourth season as head coach, continues to build a very competitive Lewis University women's golf team.

"I hope to continue to create a team atmosphere that is both competitive and family-like," said Steffey, a member of the National Golf Coaches Association. "I believe Lewis can draw outstanding student athletes and compete for conference and national titles in a short period of time.

"Our goal is to field a highly competitive team of outstanding students who enjoy the competition that Division II golf can present, while still focusing on academics."

In 1971, Steffey earned a bachelor's degree in physical education (English minor) and K-12 teaching accreditation at Texas Christian University. He was a member of the golf team, dormitory council president in 1970 and a graduate assistant golf instructor in 1971.

Steffey continues to play competitive amateur golf and has made numerous appearances in the Illinois State Amateur Championship.

A resident of Lockport, Steffey is a full-time Senior Loan Officer for American Home Mortgage. His wife, Karen, is a 1997 Lewis graduate who played two seasons for the Flyer women's golf team and was a two-time Academic All-GLVC selection. She teaches 7th-grade language arts at Summit Hill Junior High School in Frankfort.

The Steffeys are parents of a son, Tres, and a daughter, Kim. Tres is a 2004 sport management graduate of Lewis, where he played four years on the Flyer men's golf team and twice earned All-American Scholar recognition from the Golf Coaches Association of America. He is attending law school in Florida. Kim is a 2006 graduate of Western Illinois University, where she was a Dean's List student, a member of Chi Omega sorority and president of the Panhellenic Council. She is a gymnastics instructor and coach at Gymkinetics in Mokena.
