Women's Basketball Earns Academic Honor

July 20, 2007

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Lewis University women's basketball team placed ninth in the nation among NCAA Division II institutions in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll.

The Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll Award recognizes teams throughout the nation which posted the highest grade point averages (GPA) for the 2006-2007 season based upon nominations submitted by WBCA-member coaches.

The Flyers finished with a 3.452 team grade point average, finishing just 0.136 points behind first-place Lake Superior State. Lewis was the top finisher among Great Lakes Valley Conference teams. Northern Kentucky came in 15th place with a 3.385 GPA and Rockhurst finished in a tie for 25th place with a 3.315 GPA.

"This is a great accomplishment for the women's basketball program," said Lewis Director of Athletics Dan Schumacher. "These student athletes worked extremely hard and achieved tremendous success both on the court and in the classroom. Their efforts are to be commended."

Founded in 1981, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) promotes women's basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game in all of its aspects as a sport for women and girls. For more information about the WBCA, please visit www.WBCA.org.

The Lewis women's basketball team enjoyed unprecedented success in 2006-07. The Flyers captured the GLVC championship, made a third successive NCAA Division II Championship tournament appearance, earned the No. 12 national ranking, won a school-record 28 games (28-4) and assembled a school-record 13-game winning streak.
