Schmidt Named GLVC Freshman of the Year, Glenn Picked All-GLVC Second Team

March 8, 2004

INDIANAPOLIS - INDIANAPOLIS-Lewis University freshman Darcee Schmidt and sophomore Shante Glenn were honored with postseason conference awards following their play during the 2003-04 season.

Schmidt was named Great Lakes Valley Conference Freshman of the Year after leading the Flyers to a 16-12 overall record and a 13-7 mark in GLVC play. She led the team in scoring and was second on the team in rebounding, averaging 13.9 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. In addition, she led the team in scoring nine times and in rebounding eight times. Schmidt scored a season-best 27 points against Lake Superior State on December 20 and recorded her first career double double (22 points, 11 rebounds) against Saint Joseph's on December 1.

Schmidt, a 5-11 forward, ranked 11th in the league in scoring and blocked shots (0.75 per game) and was 15th in free throw percentage (.758). In conference games only, she ranked 16th in scoring (12.9 ppg), 14th in field goal percentage (.505) and 12th in blocked shots (0.65 bpg).

Schmidt is the first Lewis player to have earned Freshman of the Year recognition since 1987-88 and is the third player in school history to have garnered the honor. Krista Eshoo was the last Flyer named Freshman of the Year, while Candy Hummel snared Newcomer of the Year honors in 1986-87.

Glenn, a 5-5 point guard, was named All-GLVC second team. She is Lewis' first player to earn first- or second-team all-conference accolades since Carey Jewell was a first-team pick in 1999-2000. Glenn led the team in assists (3.86 apg) and was second in scoring (11.9 ppg). She ranked 20th in the GLVC in scoring, sixth in assists, 12th in free throw percentage (.774) and seventh in steals (2.0 spg) and assists-to-turnover ratio (1.40:1). In GLVC games only, she ranked ninth in scoring (13.9 ppg) and field goal percentage (.512), fifth in assists (4.53 apg), eighth in steals (2.05 spg) and sixth in assists-to-turnover ratio (1.62:1).

Twice during the season Glenn was named GLVC Player of the Week and she was one of three players to win the weekly award multiple times; she claimed the award December 8 and January 19.

To earn the Jan. 19 honor Glenn averaged 19.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game while shooting 61.5 percent (16-of-26) from the field. She also had an assists-to-turnover ratio of 3.5:1. Her play led Lewis to GLVC victories over Saint Joseph's and No. 18 Indianapolis. She recorded a career-high 30 points on 12-of-17 shooting against Indianapolis.

For the Dec. 8 award, Glenn led Lewis to a 3-0 week, including back-to-back victories over No. 10 Northern Kentucky and No. 11 Bellarmine. For the week, she averaged 16.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and shot 61.3 percent (19-31) from the field and 83.3 percent (10-12) from the charity stripe.

Lewis posted its best season since 1999-2000 by winning seven more games than it did during 2002-03. The Flyers also improved their GLVC record by eight games to finish in sole possession of fourth place. In addition, the team returned to the conference tournament for the first time in two seasons. The future looks promising for the Flyers as the team had four freshmen and a sophomore that were key contributors to the team's success.
