Schmidt Named Player of the Week

Jan. 2, 2007

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Lewis University's Darcee Schmidt (Machesney Park, Ill.) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the period of Dec. 18-31. The senior forward helped the Flyers collect a 3-0 record over the past two weeks including a win over No. 2 Grand Valley State on Dec. 30.

For the week, Schmidt averaged 22 points and eight rebounds and shot 54.3 percent from the field and 53.9 percent from behind the three-point arc.

In Lewis' 64-44 win over Wheeling Jesuit on Dec. 18, the first of two holiday tournament games in the Bahamas, Schmidt scored 22 points and had six rebounds and three blocks. She was 8-of-14 (.571) from the field and 2-of-3 (.667) from the three-point line.

She completed the trip by posting 16 points and nine rebounds in the Flyers' 68-61 win over Hillsdale on Dec. 19. Schmidt was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts.

Lewis topped visiting Grand Valley State, 63-52, behind Schmidt's game-high 30 points. She was 12-of-19 (.632) from the field, 4-of-6 (.667) from the three-point line and added nine rebounds and two assists. It was the second time she tallied 30-plus points in the month of December and helped the Flyers notch the best record in the month since the 1997-98 team also went 5-1.

On the season, Schmidt is averaging a league-best 21 points per game. She is second in the GLVC in rebounds (7.7 per game) and fourth in field goal percentage (.538) and three-point field goal percentage (.488). This is the fifth Player of the Week honor of Schmidt's career and second this season. She was last named Player of the Week on Nov. 20.

Lewis has won four straight games and is 10-2 overall this year. The Flyers are 3-1 in league play and return to action against visiting Bellarmine on Jan. 4.
