Darcee Schmidt has 20 points in her last two games

Flyers Can't Answer Lakers' Long Distance Call

Dec. 20, 2005

Box Score

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - Darcee Schmidt and Mary Moskal led Lewis with a combined 23 points, but it was Lake Superior State that came away with a 68-54 victory in the opening game of the Ferris State Holiday Classic Tuesday afternoon.

Schmidt totaled 12 points to lead the Flyers, while Moskal added 11. Moskal also had two blocks and two steals.

The Flyers were in control early, holding the lead for most of the first 12 minutes of the game. They led by as many as five points at the 11:58 mark, but then the Lakers hit two of their seven 3-pointers on consecutive trips down the floor to take a one-point lead with 10:39 to play in the half.

The Flyers and Lakers traded buckets for the next few minutes, with Lewis holding a 21-19 advantage with 8:02 left. After a pair of Lake Superior State free throws knotted the score at 21 with 7:39 left, the momentum shifted for good in favor of the Lakers.

Grabbing a missed jumper on the Flyers' end, the Lakers busted out on a 14-0 run to build a 12-point lead. By intermission they held their biggest lead of the half, 40-26.

It was more of the same in the second half as the Lakers led by as many as 24 before a late Lewis run cut it to 14 by the end.

Mandi Johnson led the way for the Lakers, scoring a game-high 21 points and grabbing six steals. Teammate Becky Marquardt-King was the other Laker to register double-digits in points with 13.

The Lakers hit 7-of-19 from 3-point distance, while the Flyers were 2-of-17 from beyond the arc.

Lewis made 16-of-24 free throws and pulled down 39 rebounds, while Lake Superior was 7-of-12 at the line with 41 total boards.

The Flyers play again Wednesday when they take on tournament host Ferris at 3:00 p.m.
