Quincy Snatches First Place from Flyers

Feb. 1, 2004

Box Score

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - In a battle for sole possession of first place, Quincy took control of the league's top spot with an 83-65 road victory over the Lewis University women's basketball team.

Quincy (17-3, 11-2 Great Lakes Valley Conference), who is ranked No. 11 in the nation, became the first ranked team to beat the Flyers (13-7, 10-3 GLVC) this season. Lewis was 5-0 against ranked teams entering the game.

The Hawks rode an offense that clicked on all cylinders and shot 55.9 percent (33-of-59) from the field. Courtney VonderHaar and Jessica Stuckman posted 18 points apiece, while Lisa Farrell registered team highs of 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Shante Glenn paced Lewis with 21 points, but she was 8-of-17 from the field and connected on just 2-of-8 shots in the first half.

Bryanne Callahan had 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Darcee Schmidt recorded 10 points and a team-best four rebounds in the losing effort.

"This was a statement game," said Lewis head coach Lynn Plett. "Quincy came in with something to prove and they did that. Now we'll see how our team responds. Good teams remember their losses and pay them back if they get a chance."

The Flyers will face the Hawks once more this season when they travel to Quincy in the final weekend of the regular season.

The loss snaps Lewis' seven-game winning streak and gives Quincy its 14th win in its last 15 games.

Lewis has just one game next weekend as it hosts Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday, February 7. Tip off is slated for 1 p.m.
