Callahan's Free Throws, Layup Lift Lewis Over UMSL

Feb. 26, 2004

ST. LOUIS - Bryanne Callahan sank a pair of free throws with 1:32 remaining that put Lewis ahead for good in a 58-56 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over Missouri-St. Louis.

Callahan's free throws gave the Flyers a 56-55 lead and she followed with a layup on Lewis' ensuing possession that helped fend off a pesky Riverwomen squad.

Lewis (7-6, 4-2 GLVC) built a 49-40 lead with eight minutes left in the game and appeared poised to make a push for an easy victory. UMSL (3-8, 0-5 GLVC) didn't allow that to happen though as the Riverwomen cut the lead back to two with 5:41 to play. UMSL would eventually tie the game on a 3-pointer by Deborah Dibella at the 2:48 mark; it would also be the last field goal of the game for UMSL.

UMSL had the ball underneath its basket with a chance to tie with 0.7 seconds left, but Erin Cox tipped the inbounds pass away and time expired.

Darcee Schmidt and Tracy Buchholz led the Flyers with 12 points each. Schmidt was 6-of-11 from the field with a team-high seven rebounds, while Buchholz was 4-of-7 from the field, 2-of-5 from 3-point range and had four rebounds.

Shante Glenn posted 10 points with four assists and Callahan finished with eight points. In addition, Cox came off the bench to give the team nine points and five rebounds.

The win keeps the Flyers near the top of the GLVC. Lewis sits in a tie for third in the league with Southern Indiana. Bellarmine is first at 5-1 and Quincy is one half game back at 4-1.

Lewis' next game will be January 8 when it hosts SIU Edwardsville at 5:30 p.m.
