Men's Cross Country Stares Down Strong Competition

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Lewis University men's cross country team turned in an impressive performance Saturday at the Stegemoller Classic, hosted by the University of Southern Indiana at the site of this year's NCAA Division II Championship.

The Flyers, ranked No. 19 nationally and No. 5 in the Great Lakes Region in this week's Cross Country Coaches Association polls, finished third among 15 teams with 90 points. Lock Haven, ranked No. 11 in the nation, won the meet with 47 points, and Division I Tennessee-Chattanooga was second with 65 points.

Lewis defeated five teams that hold a higher national ranking, including two other Great Lakes Region members. Sixth-ranked Grand Valley State (Mich.), the top-rated Great Lakes Region team, finished 11th; 10th-ranked Stonehill (Mass.) placed sixth; 13th-ranked California-San Diego was fourth; 15th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona finished fifth; and 17th-ranked Southern Indiana (No. 3 in the Great Lakes Region) placed eighth.

Andy Tremble placed ninth among 166 runners, covering the 8,000-meter course in 25:24. The rest of the Lewis scoring contingent was comprised of Larry Anzalone, 16th (25:56); Juan Carrillo, 17th (25:57); Braulio Benitez, 21st (26:03); and Josh Thompson, 31st (26:20). Sinan Khamo (32nd, 26:21) and John Fry (35th, 26:24) rounded out the Flyers' top seven.

Also competing for Lewis were Andrew Northrup, 37th (26:26); Lamar Quinn, 68th (27:14); Darren Orange, 84th (27:39); Adrian Myers, 92nd (27:49); John Archer, 101st (28:01); Brad Fox, 104th (28:04); Evan Sather, 106th (28:06); Dustin Long, 109th (28:14); Alberto Villa, 113th (28:20); Phil DeSantis, 115th (28:28); Jared Lauer, 122nd (28:38); Emory Burdette, 125th (28:42); Erik Donovan, 138th (29:27); Brandon Morreale, 149th (30:10); Alex Nemeth, 153rd (30:21); and Chris Sievers, 164th (33:09).
