Sept. 18, 2006 ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Lewis University sophomore goalkeeper Anthony Szymel has been named Great Lakes Valley Conference men's soccer Player of the Week for his role in two victories last week that lifted the Flyers' record to 7-1. Szymel made a career-high seven saves, including several crucial stops under heavy pressure late in the game, to help Lewis beat 13th-ranked Southern Illinois Edwardsville 1-0 on Sunday. The Flyer victory halted SIUE's 38-game GLVC regular-season unbeaten streak. Two days earlier, Szymel collected two saves as Lewis blanked Quincy 2-0. The two shutouts raised Szymel's season total to four. He ranks second in the GLVC in goals-against average (0.61) and third in save percentage (.833). The Flyers, who have allowed only five goals in eight games overall and no goals in four home contests this season, are 5-1 in the GLVC and are tied with Wisconsin-Parkside for second place. |
