The Lewis University men's soccer program has enjoyed a significant number of accomplishments throughout its 36-year history, leading up to the Flyers' three successive NCAA Division II Championship appearances in 2000, 2001 and 2002. The 2000 and 2001 seasons were magical ones for Lewis. After beginning the 2001 campaign with the No. 4 NCAA Division II national ranking, the Flyers eventually achieved the No. 1 rating twice during the season. Lewis tied for first place in the final Great Lakes Valley Conference regular-season standings before going on to win the conference title by capturing the GLVC Championship tournament. Although a disappointing loss in the NCAA Championship first round halted their quest for the national title, the Flyers still boasted a 20-1-1 overall record -- setting the school record for victories -- and a 12-1-1 mark against GLVC opponents. Following several frustrating years of falling just shy of the NCAA Championship tournament, the Flyers earned the program's first national tourney invitation in 2000. Lewis made the most of its opportunity, defeating Wisconsin-Parkside and Wheeling Jesuit before losing 1-0 to eventual national champion California State-Dominguez Hills in the national semifinals. Earlier, the Flyers tied for first in the GLVC regular-season standings with a 9-2 record. They finished the season with 17 wins (17-5-1) and the No. 4 national ranking, which, until 2001, stood as all-time school bests. In 2002, Lewis finished atop the GLVC regular-season standings for a fifth successive year and seventh time in eight seasons. The Flyers earned a third consecutive NCAA bid, finished with a 14-7 record and were voted 13th in the final NCAA Division II national ranking. Lewis has enjoyed an amazingly successful 11-year stretch under the guidance of head coach Evan Fiffles. During that span the Flyers have posted a .699 overall winning percentage (151-60-18); won four GLVC Championship tournaments; finished first or tied for first in the GLVC regular-season standings eight times (including the past five years and seven of the past eight years); and turned in a winning record every season. Lewis has registered an astounding .833 winning percentage (85-15-5) against GLVC opponents during the past nine seasons. In all, Lewis has won six GLVC championships (the conference champion is the postseason tournament winner), finished first or tied for first in the GLVC regular-season standings 11 times and achieved a .590 winning percentage (360-243-46) in its 36 seasons. In addition to the 11 first-place finishes, the Flyers have displayed impressive consistency by finishing lower than third in the league standings just three times in their 23 GLVC seasons. |
