Mastey Stays Hot; Flyers Beat No. 5 Lincoln Memorial

Aug. 26, 2007

Box Score

Harrogate, Tenn. - Junior forward Cory Mastey continued his torrid start to the season, scoring two goals and assisting on another, as the Flyers dropped No. 5 Lincoln Memorial 3-2, Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.

Mastey helped the Flyers (2-0) to a quick lead over the Railsplitters by netting two goals within the game's first few minutes. His first tally came on a penalty kick at 2:09, and the second came less than two minutes later when he took a feed from freshman Armin Vrebac and blasted a shot past Lincoln Memorial goalkeeper Patrick Riesenberg at 4:02.

The Railsplitters answered with two first-half goals of their own, both off the foot of Felipe Nogueira. Nogueira scored, unassisted, at 21:08 and then found the back of the net on a corner kick at 43:36 to even the score at 2-2.

A header by sophomore Nestor Hernandez put Lewis in front for good at 51:59. Junior Jorge De Jesus and Mastey were credited with assists on the game-winning tally.

Junior goalkeeper Anthony Szymel (2-0) picked up the win for Lewis. He stopped five shots.

Lincoln Memorial out-shot the Flyers 20-8 and held a 16-3 advantage in corner kicks. The teams combined for 40 fouls and six yellow cards.

Lewis plays again on Wednesday, in its home opener, hosting Upper Iowa at 3:00 p.m.
