MIDLAND, Mich. - A trio of players provided the offense for the Lewis University men's soccer team Saturday in the Flyers' 3-1 non-conference victory over Saginaw Valley State. Anthony Marsico scored two goals, Nestor Hernandez tallied a goal and two assists and Cory Mastey added two assists for Lewis, which improved to 2-0. The Flyers struck early when Marsico, assisted by Mastey and Hernandez, scored his first goal of the season at 4:52. Saginaw Valley State (1-1) pulled even moments later as Jimmy Henry (Brent Walker, Kevin Fox assists) found the net at 7:59. However, it didn't take long for Lewis to retaliate and score what proved to be the game-winning goal. Hernandez (Mastey) registered his first collegiate marker at 14:51, and the Flyers took a 2-1 lead into intermission. It stayed that way until the 84:06 mark, when Marsico (Hernandez) netted an insurance goal that secured the win for goalkeeper Anthony Szymel (2-0). Szymel made four saves. The Flyers earned advantages of 18-11 in total shots, 8-5 in shots on goal and 7-2 in corner kicks. Lewis plays its home and Great Lakes Valley Conference opener Friday against Southern Indiana. Game time is noon. |
