EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Lewis gained an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal in Monday's game against Southern Illinois Edwardsville, but the Cougars banged home two of their three chances and came away with a 2-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory. The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for Lewis (9-5-2, 8-2 GLVC), which finished the regular season tied with Southern Indiana for second place in the league. SIU Edwardsville, ranked 11th in NCAA Division II, improved to 15-2 overall and 10-0 in the conference with its 14th straight win. Lewis also saw its streak of five consecutive years finishing first or tied for first in the GLVC regular-season standings come to an end. Tim Velten (Victor Pacheco assist) gave SIUE the only goal it needed at 28:13. Addae Rique (Cal Thomas) added an insurance goal at 89:25, and goalkeeper Bret Richardson registered the shutout. The Flyers are the No. 3 seed for the upcoming GLVC Championship tournament and will host No. 6 Missouri-St. Louis Sunday, Nov. 2. Game time will be announced Tuesday. |
