April 13, 2004 COLUMBUS, Ind. - Lewis University's Jason Buffone captured medallist honors and led the Flyers to second place at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Golf Championship, played Monday and Tuesday at Otter Creek Golf Club. The scheduled 54-hole tournament was shortened by rain to 36 holes. Buffone shot 4-over-par 148 (74-74) on the par-72, 6,897-yard course to edge Bellarmine's Tyler Fields by one stroke. The junior from Schererville, Ind., who finished second in a playoff a year ago and tied for third as a freshman, earned All-GLVC accolades for a third successive season. Bellarmine (612) won the team title by six shots over the defending champion Flyers, who recorded rounds of 312 and 306. Southern Indiana (624) was third, followed by Indianapolis (631), Northern Kentucky (633), Quincy (635), Saint Joseph's (636), Wisconsin-Parkside (638) and Kentucky Wesleyan (647). Flyer freshmen Rob Peters (80-76=156) and Lloyd Roth (77-79=156) tied for 11th in the 45-player field. Freshman Dennis McLain (tie-22nd, 82-77=159) and senior Tres Steffey (tie-35th, 81-84=165) rounded out the Lewis contingent. |
