June 2, 2004 ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Kyle Green, men's basketball assistant coach at Marquette University during the 2003-04 season, has been named men's basketball head coach at Lewis University. The 33-year-old Green is the eighth head coach in the 57-year history of Lewis men's basketball. He replaces Jim Whitesell, who resigned in April to become head coach at Loyola University Chicago, and inherits a program that has reached the NCAA Division II Championship tournament five times and averaged 20 victories the past seven seasons. "My family and I are very excited about the opportunity to continue Lewis University's outstanding men's basketball tradition," Green said. "People are what make universities special, and there is no doubt that Lewis has an unbelievable track record of great administrators, coaches, staff and players. "I have been very fortunate to have worked alongside great head coaches in Tom Crean (Marquette) and Greg McDermott (Northern Iowa)," Green continued. "I certainly owe them a great debt of gratitude for all they have taught me about coaching and leading championship teams. "I cannot wait for the opportunity to put all I have learned to use at Lewis, and I look forward to the challenge of coaching in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, the top NCAA Division II conference in the country," Green added. Green was Marquette's recruiting coordinator and was involved with game preparation, individual instruction and administrative responsibilities. He helped Crean lead the 2003-04 Golden Eagles to a 19-12 record and a spot in the National Invitation Tournament quarterfinals. Green went to Marquette in 2003 following a two-year stint as assistant coach at the University of Northern Iowa, where he also served as recruiting coordinator. Green spent the 2000-01 season as head coach at NCAA Division II Western State College in Gunnison, Colo., where his team posted an 11-16 record. He was assistant coach at Division II Augustana (S.D.) College from 1997-2000, at Division II Southwest State (Minn.) University from 1995-97 and at Division III Hamline (Minn.) University, his alma mater, from 1993-95. Following his 1992 graduation from Hamline, Green served one season as head coach of the Frederica Basketball Club in Denmark. He was named Denmark Serie Coach of the Year after guiding Frederica to a 30-3 record and the Denmark Serie title.
A three-year starter for the Hamline basketball team, Green earned academic all-conference honors his junior and senior years and was team captain. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in social studies/psychology at Hamline and is pursuing a master's degree in athletic administration at the University of St. Thomas (Minn.). Green is a native of Minneapolis. He and wife Michele are parents of a son, A.J. (4), and a daughter, Emerson (2). |
