Flyers Cruise Past Trinity Christian, 93-62 :: Turner scores 17, Williams posts double-double

ROMEOVILLE - DeAndre Williams knows very well that, especially at this time of year, it is far better to give than to receive.

The senior guard took that sentiment to heart Monday night, dishing out a career-high 10 assists to his Lewis University teammates in a 93-62 Flyer romp over non-conference opponent Trinity Christian at Neil Carey Arena.

The 10 assists are the most by a Flyer this season and, coupled with his 10 points on 5 of 5 shooting, gave Williams his first collegiate double-double.

Senior Steve Turner led the Lewis scoring effort with 17 points and had three of the Flyers' 15 steals. Junior transfer Pat Monaghan scored a season-high 12 points for Lewis, which improved to 5-6 with its highest point total of the year.

Also joining the superlatives parade were freshman Ian Jones, season highs of 10 points and five rebounds; junior transfer Bruno Marion, season highs of eight points and three rebounds; and redshirt junior John Loeffelholz, nine points and a season-best three steals.

Lewis took a lead it would never relinquish when Anthony Scala canned a 3-pointer on the Flyers' first possession. After the lead grew to 17-6 at the 13:49 mark, Trinity Christian (4-10) drew to within seven points, 19-12, at 11:40.

Loeffelholz tallied five points in a 7-0 spurt that gave the Flyers a 26-12 cushion. The Trolls of the NAIA Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference managed a 7-2 run that cut their deficit to 28-19, but Lewis quickly put the margin back into double digits for good and cruised to a 50-34 halftime advantage.

The Flyers shot a crisp .565 (35 of 62) from the floor that included a .450 clip (9 of 20) from 3-point range. Scala collected three treys to lift his season total to 43, two more than he had all of last season.

Lewis also was solid at the foul line, converting 14 of 17 for an .824 success rate, and had an assist on 27 of its 35 field goals. The Flyers committed just 13 turnovers while forcing 28 Trinity Christian miscues.

Trinity Christian's Charles Commeret led all scorers with 20 points. Ty DeWitte had 16 points and a game-high eight rebounds, Kyle Vroegh handed out six assists and Nick Rykse had four assists and four steals.

Lewis returns to action Dec. 30 at Ferris State in Big Rapids, Mich.
