Furmaniak, Young Named To AAA All-Star Team

Former Lewis University baseball standouts J.J. Furmaniak, a member of the San Diego Padres' AAA affiliate in Portland, Ore., and Ernie Young, who plays for the Cleveland Indians' AAA team in Buffalo, N.Y., have been named to the 2005 AAA All-Star team.

Furmaniak and his Pacific Coast League teammates will take on Young and the International League All-Stars Wednesday, July 13, in Sacramento, Calif.

Furmaniak, the Padres' 22nd-round draft choice in 2000 following his junior season at Lewis, played in 78 of Portland's first 86 games. He has played 35 games at shortstop and 43 games at third base, his primary position in recent weeks, and is batting .264 with 11 home runs, 33 RBI, 12 doubles and four triples.

The Bolingbrook High School product was selected to the NCAA Division II All-America third team, All-North Central Region first team and All-Great Lakes Valley Conference first team in 2000 and was an All-GLVC second-team selection in 1999.

On the Flyers' career lists, Furmaniak ranks 13th in stolen bases (55), 18th in batting average (.369) and doubles (39), 19th in hits (206), 20th in home runs (27), 22nd in runs (148) and 25th in RBI (127) and triples (8).

Young, an outfielder chosen by the Oakland Athletics in the 10th round of the 1990 draft following a three-year Lewis career, played in 76 of Buffalo's first 87 games. He has produced a .299 batting average, 19 home runs, 66 RBI, a .406 on-base percentage and a .544 slugging percentage for the Bisons, who own a 7-game lead in the International League's North Division.

Young leads the IL in RBI and is second in home runs, third in on-base percentage, fourth in walks (44) and seventh in slugging percentage.

The Chicago Mendel Catholic High School graduate was a two-time All-American (first team in 1990, second team in 1989), All-North Central Region first team and All-GLVC in 1990, and North Central Region Player of the Year and All-GLVC in 1989. He helped lead the Flyers to three successive NCAA Division II Championship appearances and third-place national finishes in 1988 and 1990.

Young was a member of the 2000 U.S. Olympic team that won the gold medal in Sydney, Australia, and was inducted into the Lewis Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998. He stands eighth in home runs (36), ninth in stolen bases (63), 21st in runs (151), 27th in RBI (120), 33rd in doubles (32), 34th in batting average (.347), 36th in hits (165) and 38th in triples (6) on the Lewis career lists.
