ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Joe Carbone drove home the winning run in the bottom of the 15th inning to give the Lewis University baseball team a 5-4 win over Kentucky Wesleyan Saturday in game one of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader.

Kentucky Wesleyan won the nightcap 8-0.

Carbone's one-out, game-winning hit plated Billy Duffy, who had doubled to lead off the inning.

The Flyers (6-45, 5-33 GLVC) sent the scheduled seven-inning contest into extra frames by scoring a run in the seventh. Bryan Druktenis doubled with one out, advanced to third on Duffy's single and scored on Mike Smith's sacrifice fly to make it a 4-4 game.

Lewis trailed 2-0 after an inning but pulled even in the fifth. Ryan McManaman reached on an error to lead off the inning and later scored on a fielder's choice by Druktenis, who tallied the tying run on a wild pitch.

After Kentucky Wesleyan responded by scoring twice in the sixth for a 4-2 advantage, Lewis edged closer with a run in the bottom half. Ryan Duran led off with a single and moved station to station on Carbone's sacrifice, Tim Bingham's fly ball and McManaman's infield single.

Flyer reliever Jon Crettol tossed seven scoreless innings and notched his first win of the season. Crettol, who allowed five hits and two walks while fanning three, worked out of two bases-loaded jams including one with nobody out in the 12th.

Starter Jon Guzzo turned in a solid performance as well. Guzzo yielded four runs, six hits and a walk and struck out five in eight innings of work.

Duffy led the Flyers' 13-hit attack with three hits. Duran, Carbone and Chris Brigham collected two hits apiece, and Brian Clancy had a double.

The Flyers and Panthers square off in another doubleheader on Sunday. Game time at Brennan Field is noon.
