ROMEOVILLE - The pitching of Matt Tanton and Matt Rolle lifted the Lewis University baseball team to a 1-0, 3-2 Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep over Kentucky Wesleyan Saturday at Brennan Field.

The sweep was the first for the Flyers (16-31, 10-21 GLVC) since April 14, 2002. Kentucky Wesleyan fell to 28-19, 16-16.

The opener, scheduled for seven innings, went nine instead. Tanton (6-2) outdueled KWC's Cory Wade (5-2), whose 1.80 earned-run average entering the game ranked third in the GLVC.

Both pitchers went the distance. Tanton, who posted his first career shutout and the Flyers' first shutout of 2004, allowed just five hits and two walks while striking out eight. Wade yielded three hits and one walk while fanning 12.

Darryl Jenkins singled to lead off the ninth inning and stole second after Andy Sweet lined out to center field. With two outs, Ahren Baranski doubled deep into the left-field corner to easily score Jenkins.

Tanton, who leads the Flyers with a 5-1 record and 3.19 ERA in conference games, worked out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the sixth and stranded runners at first and third in the seventh.

Rolle (2-1) relieved starter Matt Petrusek, who departed with an injury after 2 2/3 innings. Rolle gave just three hits and two walks and struck out four in 4 1/3 scoreless innings.

The Panthers touched Petrusek for two runs in the first, but the Flyers pulled even in the bottom of the inning. Jenkins walked with one out and scored on Victor Naut's two-out double. Matt Newquist's single sent Naut to third, and Naut scored when the Kentucky Wesleyan right fielder bobbled the ball.

The Flyers' winning run in the fifth also was unearned. With one out, Brian Davis reached on an error by the KWC pitcher and scored on Jenkins' double.

In the seventh, Rolle struck out Josh Milam with runners at second and third and nobody out. After Paul Richardson was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Rolle fanned Adam Hancock and got Matt Dugan to ground out weakly to second.

The teams play another doubleheader Sunday beginning at noon.
