ROMEOVILLE - Chris Carbonaro's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 13th inning Friday gave the Lewis University baseball team a 6-5 victory over Missouri-St. Louis and a split of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader.

In game one, UMSL's Brad Drewes threw a 3-hitter to lead the Rivermen to a 4-1 win.

The Flyers (12-22, 6-13 GLVC) came from behind late in the nightcap to force extra innings, scoring once in the eighth and twice in the ninth.

Following singles by Mike Loprieno and Brian Davis, a two-out single by Andy Sweet plated the Lewis run in the eighth.

Brandon Niewinski led off the ninth with a single and scored on Darryl Jenkins' double, and Jenkins scored the tying run on Loprieno's double.

Both teams wasted scoring chances, with Lewis leaving the bases loaded in the 10th and UMSL doing the same in the 11th.

Andy Radak led off the 13th with a single and advanced on Davis' sacrifice. After Baranski reached on an error to put runners at first and third, Sweet was intentionally walked and Carbonaro hit a sharp liner to left to bring home the winning run.

UMSL (18-17-1, 13-9 GLVC) scored two unearned runs in the first off starter Justin Barr, who allowed six hits, three runs (one earned) and one walk while striking out three in six-plus innings.

The Flyers made it 2-1 in their half of the first on a Davis single, a Baranski bunt single, Sweet's sacrifice bunt and Carbonaro's sacrifice fly. Lewis pulled even in the third when Loprieno led off with a single, advanced on a passed ball and Radak's sacrifice bunt, and scored on Davis' suicide squeeze bunt.

UMSL earned a 5-2 lead with a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth, setting the stage for the Lewis comeback.

Greg Moss (2-3) collected the win in relief. The freshman right-hander pitched three innings and yielded just one hit and two walks while fanning three.

Loprieno and Radak led the Flyers' 14-hit attack with three hits apiece. Davis, Sweet and Jenkins each had two hits.

Lewis took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the opener when Baranski doubled and scored on Phil Marchinski's two-out single. The Flyers, however, would register just one more hit the remainder of the seven-inning contest.

The Rivermen scored twice in the sixth and added two insurance runs in the seventh in support of Drewes (5-0), who struck out nine and walked only two.

Flyer senior right-hander Matt Tanton (4-2) pitched well in defeat, allowing two runs, eight hits and two walks while striking out six in 5 2/3 innings.

Lewis and UMSL play another doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon.
