ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Freshman Deirdre Mikolajcik set a pool and school record with an NCAA B time of 5:08.33 in the women's 500 freestyle, but the Wayne State women defeated Lewis 121-83 while the men edged Lewis 118-87. "Wayne State is the defending conference champions and they are well coached," head coach Steve Thompson said. "They continue to set the standard for the GLIAC, and we expected them to be competitive." Overall 13 pool records were set with Lewis recording six of them. There were 16 NCAA B times, 10 for Wayne State and six for Lewis. Senior Adam Brown broke his own pool record and recorded an NCAA B time with a victory in the men's 1650 freestyle (16:12.33). He also swam the 1000 in the same race in an NCAA B time. Freshman Kevin Coates also recorded an NCAA B time of 16:21.85 with a second place performance. Freshman Trent Mason finished fourth in the race (17:46.12). Mikolajcik set a pool record with a time of 1:57.21 for Lewis in the women's 200 freestyle. Wayne State's Tiago Oliveira set a pool record (1:44.29) in the 200 freestyle. Lewis sophomore Jared Zimmer was also under the record with a time of 1:44.37. Zimmer recorded a pool record with a 4:42.62 performance in the men's 500 freestyle In the men's 400 medley relay Wayne State recorded a pool record time of 3:37.37. Wayne State's Ashley St. Andrew achieved an NCAA B time in the 1000 during the 1650 freestyle. She finished the 1650 at 17:36.34 an NCAA B time and pool record. Natalia Buso also recorded an NCAA B time for Wayne State of 17:36.34. Wayne State's Elaina Hogle set a pool record in the 400 individual medley with an NCAA B time of 4:37.37. Hogle also set a pool record and NCAA B time of 58.99 in the 100 butterfly. In the men's 100 butterfly Sean Smith of Wayne State stopped the clock at 52.27 for an NCAA B time and a pool record. "Both teams performed at a high level today. Anytime you have to achieve an NCAA B time standard to win an event, it is an exciting atmosphere. We had a great crowd today, and I am pleased with the way we embraced the challenges," Thompson said. "Obviously, we will continue to build our program to improve to win these meets. However, I am confident our team is getting experience against quality opponents, and we will be ready to go at the GLIAC and NCAA Division II Championships." In other notable Lewis performances, the 400 medley relay team of Mikolajcik, sophomore Bridget Bettenhausen, freshman Allie Henges and freshman Stephanie Halcomb finished second with a time of 4:10.73 In the men's 400 medley relay sophomore Adam Olszeski, freshman Tom Fitzgerald, freshman Allan Sliva and freshman Evan Childers took second (3:42.87). Sophomore Ryan Harrison, freshman Arty Czarobski, freshman Luke Pavlakovich and sophomore Aaron Olszeski finished in third (3:44.82). Mikolajcik won the women's 200 freestyle (1:57.21). Freshman Carrie Borgstede came in second (2:01.04) Mikolajcik also won the women's 500 freestyle with a time of 5:08.33. Sophomore Nicole Marano won the women's 50 freestyle (25.68) and Halcomb followed her in second (26.26). The Flyers took the top two spots in the 100 freestyle with Borgstede winning the event (55.79) and Marano taking second (56.25). Bettenhausen finished second in both the 400 freestyle (4:51.24) and 100 breaststroke (1:10.43). Freshman Ruth Bass came in third (4:57.16) in the 400 freestyle for the Flyers. Henges came in third in the 100 butterfly, stopping the clock at 1:02.13. Zimmer and Ament took the top two spots in the men's 500 freestyle with times of 4:42.62 and 4:49.69 respectively. Lewis had three of the top four finishes in the men's 100 breaststroke. Fitzgerald won the event (1:01.16), Czarobski took third (1:02.58) and Pavlakovich came in fourth (1:02.85). The Lewis men also had three in the top four in the 200 freestyle. Zimmer came in second (1:44.37), Ament followed (1:47.48) and sophomore Adam Olszeski took fourth (1:48.18). Brown came finished the men's 100 butterfly in 54.25, good for second place. In the men's 50 freestyle Sliva finished fourth (22.72). Aaron Olszeski's time of 4:23.84 was good for third in the 400 individual medley. In the men's 100 freestyle Sliva took third (49.38) and junior Greg Marx wasn't far behind in fourth place (49.75). The Flyers are back in the pool on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 at the collegeswimming.com/TYR Invite in Kenosha, Wis. |
