Flyers Strong At Eastern Illinois Invite

CHARLESTON, Ill. - The Lewis men's and women's swimming team turned in five first place finishes and one NCAA "B" qualifying time at the at the Eastern Illinois Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The women finished third overall (341.5 points), while the men placed fourth (455 points) at the five-team meet.

For the men, junior Adam Brown swam to first in the 500 freestyle (4:51.52) and the 1650 freestyle (16:36.75). Brown also grabbed one of the men's seven second-place showings by swimming a 2:02.48 in the 200 butterfly.

Senior Steve O'Leary placed first in the 200 breaststroke (2:18.24), and senior Michael Lapustin took first in the 200 IM (1:57.72) and earned an NCAA "B" cut with his second-place showing in the 200 backstroke (1:53.99).

Other second-place efforts by the men were freshman Jared Zimmer in the 1650 freestyle (16:36.85), Lapustin in the 100 backstroke (52.74), O'Leary in the 400 IM (4:22.89) and senior Jevgenijs Pesins in the 100 butterfly (54.11).

The men's 500 freestyle relay team of Pesins, freshman Adam Olszeski, Zimmer and Lapustin finished second with a time of 7:13.42.

Junior Stephanie White-Olson submitted the women's lone first-place finish with a time 2:29.72 in the 200 breastroke, and she snared one of the women's four second-place finishes with a 1:10.11 in the 100 breaststroke.

Senior Leigh Dodd placed second in the 100 and 200 backstroke (1:03.52, 2:15.03) and the 500 freestyle (5:23.32).

The women also secured three third-place finishes in relay events. The 100 and 200 medley relay team of Dodd, White-Olson, senior Michelle Sliva and freshman Nicole Marano finished third with a time of 1:55.07 in the 100 and 4:10.75 in the 200. The 400 freestyle relay team of Marano, senior Tristine Schmidt, Sliva and freshman Bridget Bettenhausen swam to third with a time of 3:49.12.

Up next for the Flyers is the first home meet of the season, as Lewis welcomes College of DuPage to campus on Nov. 18 at 1 p.m.
