Explorers Take First Half but Drop Season Finale to Xavier 76-65

Philadelphia, PA - The La Salle Explorers (10-20, 3-12) wrapped up their 2006-07 campaign with a 76-65 defeat to the Xavier Musketeers (22-7, 12-3) on Saturday afternoon at Tom Gola Arena.

The Explorers were led by junior Darnell Harris (Baltimore, MD/St. Frances) who scored 17 points on four three-pointers and freshman Ruben Guillandeaux (Brooklyn, NY/St. Patrick's) who scored 14 while dealing three assists.

Guillandeaux gave his team their first lead when he hit a jumper with 16:29 left in the first half to make the score 6-5.  The Explorers built that lead to as many as nine points and took a 38-32 lead into halftime.

Xavier tied the game at 38-38 when Stanley Burrell hit one of two free throws with 17:56 remaining but the Explorers responded by opening up another five-point lead.  The Musketeers again tied the game at 47-47 on a pair of Burrell free throws. 

With 11:05 to play Burrell's lay-up gave Xavier its first lead since the 16:36 mark of the first half.  They never trailed again enroute to their 22nd win and clinching of the top seed in the Atantic 10 Tournament.


 

 

Departing seniors Mike St. John (Northboro, MA/River School) and Sean Neal (Springfield, MA/Salisbury School) got their second consecutive start and finished with a combined five points, four rebounds and four assists.

With the defeat the Explorers, who will not qualify for the Atlantic 10 post-season conclude their 2006-07 campaign.
