Waters Named Diamond 5 Pitcher of the Week, Again

Posted by: Marc Mullen

PHILADELPHIA, PA – For the second time this season, La Salle University Baseball starting pitcher Dan Waters (Wyndmoor, PA/La Salle High School) was named the Pitcher of the Week by the Philadelphia Diamond 5 after his effort against George Washington on April 29.

In his 12th start of the year, Waters threw his first complete game, and the first for an Explorer pitcher this season, after pitching eight innings against the Colonials. He scattered six hits and allowed just one earned run in the 2-1 loss.

The junior also fanned seven batters in the game, making it the fifth time this year he has struck out at least seven in an outing. He increased his team-high to 69 punch outs, which is the third-most in one season at La Salle.

Earlier this season, Waters had a 12-strikeout performance against Delaware State on March 14, which earned him his first Diamond 5 Pitcher of the Week nod. For the season, Waters is 3-5 with a 3.18 ERA, the best mark by a La Salle starter, has pitched a team-high 68.0 innings.

Formed with the mission of increasing the exposure of college baseball in the area, the Diamond Five is comprised of the five Division I universities in Philadelphia that sponsor baseball. The Diamond Five will announce a Player and Pitcher of the Week every Tuesday. The first-ever All-Diamond Five team will be announced at the conclusion of the season.

Also in voting conducted by the area head coaches, Saint Jospeh's Mike Gentile was named the Player of the week after batting .625 in five games. He was 4-for-5 at Villanova and 3-for-4 in the opener of an Atlantic 10 series at Richmond. He reached base in 15 of 21 plate appearances for an on-base percentage of .714. The junior also scored five runs and drove in one and is batting a .300 with 22 RBI this season.

The Explorers return to action this weekend, when they host the Spiders for a three-game Atlantic 10 set at Hank DeVincent Field starting Friday at 3:30 PM.
