La Salle Ends Charlotte Series with Loss

Posted by: Marc Mullen

Bill Kern was 2-for-3 with the only Explorer run.

George Hudock knocked in the only run for La Salle .

CHARLOTTE, NC - The La Salle University Baseball team battled all weekend with Atlantic 10 leader Charlotte, but in the end the Explorers were swept by the 49ers in the three-game series, including losing an 11-1 decision Sunday at Tom and Lib Phillips Field.

Charlotte (27-12-1, 12-3 A-10) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning, keyed by Chris Taylor's three-RBI double. They later added another run in the second and led 5-0.

That was all the run support that 49er Adam Mills would need on the mound. He pitched a seven-inning complete game, allowing just five hits, one earned run and struck out 10 batters without a walk to win his sixth game of the year.

La Salle (14-24, 6-8 A-10) scored its only run of the game in the fourth inning. Bill Kern broke up Mills perfect game with a single to right field, which extended Kern's hitting streak to a team-long nine straight.

That was followed by a Rich Prall single and a George Hudock RBI single, which cut the Charlotte lead to 5-1.

The 49ers would respond with a run in the bottom of the fourth and secured the game with a five spot in the fifth.

Kern would later add a double in the sixth inning to give him eight hits in the series in 12 at bats (.667) and he scored six runs.

La Salle's John Reifsnyder started his first game of the season for the Explorers and suffered the loss.

The Explorers continue their 10-game road swing with games at Delaware (Tuesday) and at Rider (Wednesday) before getting back into A-10 action at George Washington next weekend.
