La Salle's Offense Cannot Help Burge

Posted by: Marc Mullen

DAYTON, OH - After shutting out the Dayton Flyers Friday, the Explorers looked as if they would do it again Saturday. However, the Flyers plated the only run of the game in the seventh inning to edge La Salle, 1-0, in Atlantic 10 action at Time Warner Cable Stadium.

Sophomore Dennis Burge would not factor into the decision, despite scattering seven hits and striking out four batters over six innings. He was helped by two inning-ending double plays in the first and third, the latter was after the Flyers finally had a base runner reach third base, something they had not done at all in Friday's loss.

Classmate Jamie Cowan (1-2) pitched the final two innings in relief of Burge and Dayton would take advantage of him in his first inning of work. Michael DeLuca hit a one-out single then moved to second on Kevin Miller’s groundball.

With two outs in the seventh, Frank Tedesco would replace DeLuca as a pinch runner just before Michael Massa drew a walk. Galen Schumm singled to right field, driving in Tedesco and moving Massa to third. Bobby Getty loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch, but Cowan got William Benoit to fly to right field to avoid any more damage.

Dayton (9-10, 1-1 A-10) starter Kyle Lindsay improve to 3-0 after seven innings of work, allowing five hits and striking out 11 batters. Craig Rohren pitched 1.2 innings of relief to earn his second save of the season.

La Salle (6-14, 1-1 A-10) was looking to win its fourth straight game and had chances throught the contest. They had baserunners in eight of nine innings and had a runner on second base with one out in two innings, the third and seventh. However, they could never get a runner past second.

Senior George Hudock was the only Explorer with two hits and was stranded at second twice, including when the final out of the game was recorded.

The Explorers will look to win the series with Dayton when they play the rubbermatch Sunday with a start time of 1 PM.
