Papin Sets School Record in 5K; Plummer and Schopf Join Her as NCAA Regional Qualifiers in Event

April 26, 2007

Philadelphia, PA -  Explorer junior runner Rachel Papin (Philadelphia, PA/St. Hubert) was the first Explorer competitor in the 113th Penn Relays on Thursday at Franklin Field.

The performance earned her qualification in the NCAA regionals in the event along with teammates junior Christa Plummer (Quakertown, PA/Palisades) and senior Danielle Schopf (Glenolden, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) who finished 11th and 18 respectively out of 31 competitors.

Papin, also an NCAA provisional qualifier in the 10k, took fourth place with a time of 16:19.29 - just 12 seconds off the pace of winnner Aine Hoban of Providence.

Papin has also earned NCAA Regional qualification in the 1500m event.

Also turning in an inspiring performance was senior Joe Dare (Souderton, PA/Souderton) who clocked the second time of 29:25.84 in the 10k to take second in the event and become an NCAA provisional qualifier.  Dare's time was second only to teammate Sean Quigley (Braintree, MA/Archbishop Williams).  Dare churned out his time in front of a swelling crowd of La Salle faithful whose support could be heard throughout the historic venue.

Dare sets the number of Explorers who have qualified outright or provisionally in the NCAA Championships (June 6 - Sacramento, CA) or the NCAA Regionals (May 25 - Gainesville, FL) to seven in the outdoor season and ten for the 2006-2007 combined season.

Competition continues throughout the weekend.
