Lamar Volleyball Hosts Texas State and UTA

Oct. 18, 2007

BEAUMONT - The Lamar University volleyball team will put it's perfect Southland Conference record and 12-match winning streak on the line this weekend as they host a pair of weekend matches against Texas State and UT-Arlington on Friday at Saturday at McDonald Gym.

The Lady Cardinals open the weekend with a 7 p.m. showdown against the Bobcats of Texas State, who enter the match with a 5-2 record in SLC play and a 12-7 record overall. Lamar will close out the weekend on Saturday, hosting the Mavericks of UTA, who come in at 13-7 overall and 6-1 in SLC play, at 3 p.m.

The Lady Cardinals enter the match with a 7-0 record in SLC play, as they have cruised past their SLC-East foes with just two games lost in their seven matches. The Cards last action came against Nicholls State and Southeastern Louisiana last weekend, with LU posting 3-0 wins in both matches.

The Lamar offense, which ranks first in the SLC, is led by senior Molli Abel's 3.25 kills per game with a SLC-best .389 hitting percentage, while she is posting 1.18 blocks per game. Sophomore Kaci Brewer has also been solid offensively, posting 3.14 kills per game, while freshman Destiny Mason has averaged 2.31 kills and 3.04 digs per game. Sophomore setter Adrianne Meengs has played strong, passing out 11.10 assists and knocking down 2.10 kills per game while the Lamar defense is anchored by junior Andrea Hamilton, who is averaging 4.94 digs per game.

Texas State is led by Lawrencia Brown's 3.28 kills per game, while Jessica Weynand is averaging 2.90 kills per game. The Bobcat offense is quarterbacked by Shelbi Irvin and Brittany Collins who are passing out 7.90 and 5.15 assists per game respectively, while their defense is led by Kacey Wimpy's 4.55 digs per game.

UT-Arlington is led by Teena Sobczak's 3.15 kills per game, while Torrie Dacus is averaging 2.84 kills per game. Setter Emily Nedderman has passed out 10.27 assists per game and the Arlington defense is anchored by Dani Johnson's 4.74 digs per game.

After these weekends' matches, the Lady Cardinals will hit the road for a pair of matches against Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin. Lamar will take on SHSU on Friday October 26 at 7 p.m. in Huntsville, Texas, and then play the Ladyjacks on Saturday at 7p.m. in Nacogdoches, Texas.
