Lamar Volleyball Blanks Northwestern State 3-0

BEAUMONT - Behind a strong offensive effort by senior Courtney Mitchell, the Lamar University volleyball team picked up a 3-0 win over Northwestern State Saturday afternoon at McDonald Gym.

The Lady Cardinals improve to 22-8 on the year and 13-1 in Southland Conference play with the win. The Lady Demons fall to 4-10 in conference play and 8-15 overall with the loss.

The Lady Demons started the match with a big run, opening up a 9-1 lead, but could not hold off the Lady Cardinals once they got hot. Lamar closed out the first game on a 29-7 run to win 30-16. The Lady Cards took advantage of a -.219 hitting percentage while hitting .129 themselves to pick up the win.

In game two Lamar again started out slow, but finished strong for a 30-20 win. The Lady Cards were led by Molli Abel's five kills with a .500 hitting percentage to overtake the Lady Demons who hit just .158 for the game.

In game three Northwestern State gave LU all they could handle. Holding a four point lead at 24-20, the Lady Cardinals could not finish off Northwestern State who tied the game at 28. The Lady Cards finally finished off the Lady Demons with a kill by Mitchell, giving them a 32-30 win.

Mitchell Led Lamar with 11 kills and a .476 hitting percentage while posting a team-high five blocks. Shalayne Blythe was also strong offensively for Lamar, posting nine kills, while Adrianne Meengs passed out 38 assists.

Libero Andrea Hamilton led the defensive effort for Lamar with 18 digs. With her 18 digs, Hamilton took possession of the school record for single season digs. She passed Miriam Dickerson's record of 534 digs on her 11th dig of the match. She now has 542 digs on the year and 1,125 digs for her career.
 

 

The Lady Cardinals will be in action again on next Friday, when they take on Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 7 p.m. at McDonald Gym.
