Lamar Falls to Navarro College, 1-0, in Second Overtime
Aug. 18, 2007 BEAUMONT - Playing its first-ever soccer match in school history, Lamar University fell to Navarro College, 1-0, in exhibition action when Ashley Browne booked in the only goal of the game in the second overtime Saturday night at Cardinal Stadium. Lamar will play Texas Southern next Sunday (Aug. 26) at 2 p.m. in Cardinal Stadium in its final exhibition game. The Cardinals open the regular season Friday, Aug. 31 against Eastern Washington at Loyola-Marymount's Tournament in Los Angeles, Calif. Lamar's regular season home opener is Sunday, Sept. 23 against Grambling. The game remained scores through 100 minutes of action heading into the second of two 10 minute overtimes. Neither team was able to convert a goal during the two 45 minute halves or the first 10 minute overtime. Browne kicked in the game-winning goal at 114:05. Lamar goalkeeper Kelsie Binetti blocked Robin D'Argo's initial shot. Browne was able to kick the rebound over the sprawled Binetti into the back right corner of the goal to end the game. "I told the kids I don't care what the score and I don't care if we win or lose. Let's see if we can possess the ball, let's see if we can work hard and let's see if we can play together," said first-year coach Matthew Dillon. "I'm very happy with the way they did that. Navarro has played in the national junior college championship the last two years and they've been practicing for two weeks and we've practiced for four days. Taking all that into consideration, I was happy with the way we played." Navarro held a decided advantage in shots, 13 to five, and in shots on game, five to two. Rachelle Barry led the Cardinals with three shots. Stefani Turner and Ericka Predmore each has one shot on goal for Lamar. Browne and D'Argo each had three shots on goal to pace Navarro, and Samantha Silvers and Shanice Watson each had one shot on goal.
"This was good conditioning for us and I think each girl got in the game for at least 20 minutes," commented Dillon. "I really liked the effort I saw from the team tonight and everything else is coachable. I was real happy with the work ethic and the girls playing together. Our possession was up and down, but that's to be expected from a first game. Overall, I was very happy with the outcome from tonight." |
