BEAUMONT - The Lamar women's basketball team looks to extend its current two-game winning streak on Thursday night, hosting Prairie View A&M in a non-conference game at 6 p.m. in the Montagne Center.

At 5-2 on the year, Lamar is off to its best start since jumping out to a 6-2 mark during the 1991-92 season. The Lady Cardinals will look to match that mark and establish their second three-game winning streak of the season with a win against PV. The Lady Panthers enter Thursday's tilt with a 1-4 record, including an 85-24 loss to Louisiana-Lafayette on Monday.

LU is 16-1 all-time against Prairie View. The Lady Cards won the teams' last meeting, 65-59, on Dec. 4, 2003 in Prairie View.

Lamar enters play with the momentum of a 78-47 victory over Centenary College on Saturday, Dec. 11. Three Lady Cardinals scored in double figures, led by junior Audrea Samuel with 16 points. Sophomore LaToya Carson added 14 points and Bridgette Brackens chipped in with 11 points off the bench.

Carson, a 5-9 guard from Long Beach, MS, currently leads the team in scoring (11.9 ppg) and ranks second in steals (11) and rebounds (5.6 rpg). Her scoring average ranks eighth in the Southland Conference and she is 16th in rebounding. Carson is also ninth in the league with a 46.8 field goal percentage.

Samuel, a former standout at Beaumont's Ozen HS, is second on the team and 12th in the SLC in scoring (11.3 ppg). She also leads the team with nine blocks, placing her fifth among the league leaders.

Freshman Chelsea Gugliotta, a 6-0 forward from Bicknell, IN, continues to lead the team with 5.7 rebounds per game, while ranking third on the squad with 7.4 points per outing. Gugliotta's rebounds per game average ranks 15th among the SLC leaders.

The Lady Cardinals are averaging 72.3 points a game, while surrendering 52.6 a game to opponents. Lamar leads the league in scoring margin (+19.7), scoring defense (52.6), field goal percentage (43.1), field goal percentage defense (27.9) and rebounding (54.1), along with a league-best +16.0 rebounding margin and a 16.86 assists per game average.

Prairie View is led by Ciara Sanders with 9.5 points a game and Karlanda Butler is second with 8.8 points per contest. Ashley Gulley leads the team in rebounding (5.6), while adding 5.4 points per game.

The Lady Panthers average 44.4 points a game as a team, while giving up an average of 76.2. PV pulls down 36.0 rebounds and opponents grab 50.4 per game.

LU hits the road for its next game, traveling to Lafayette, Louisiana for a non-conference contest against the University of Louisiana-Lafayette on Wednesday, Dec. 22 at 6 p.m. in Earl K. Long Gym. Lamar returns home on Thursday, Dec. 30 with a 5 p.m. game against Oral Roberts, as part of a men's and women's doubleheader.
