Aldrin Campos Named Men's Tennis Coach

Sept. 18, 2006

BEAUMONT - Aldrin Campos, who guided Tennessee Tech to a pair conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances, was named head men's tennis coach at Lamar University, announced athletics director Billy Tubbs.

Lamar has restructured its tennis program with David Wong serving as head women's tennis coach. Ron Wesbrooks, who was Lamar's men's tennis coach from 1971-87 and is still a kinesiology instructor at the university, is the director of tennis operations and will oversee both programs.

"We're very pleased to have someone with his playing and coaching background take over the men's team," said Wesbrooks. "He played No. 1 at an NCAA Division I school and has been a coach at the division I level, so he knows the ins and outs of what it takes to be successful. With his background, he has really hit the ground running."

Campos comes to Lamar after serving as the men's and women's head coach at Tennessee Tech from July 2001-05. He guided the men's program to Ohio Valley Conference championships in 2003 and 2004, earning NCAA Tournament berths both years.

Campos helped the women's program post OVC runner-up finishes in 2002 and 2003. His women's team posted a combined OVC regular-season record of 26-1 from 2001-05. He recruited and coach two OVC players of the year.

"It's going to be very challenging, but I see it as a great opportunity," Campos said in accepting the job. "The guys are very motivated and the administration is very willing to support the program. I feel like I have the support from the administration.

"It was a tough year last year, but I get the sense that the guys want to get back to being contenders every year. We have more talent already, and I am in the process of recruiting. It's going to take some time, but we are at a good starting point."

Prior to serving as the head coach, Campos was an assistant coach at Tennessee Tech from August 1997-July 2001. During that tenure, the men's and women's teams were both OVC champions in 1999. He served as a graduate assistant coach from 1994-97.

In addition to his assistant coaching duties, Campos was also the assistant director of marketing and promotions for the athletics department. He assisted in all marketing and promotional activities, including coordinating basketball game activities and assisting in the Golden Eagle Scramble golf tournament.

Campos started his coaching career by serving as the women's volunteer coach at the University of Kentucky from August 1993-May 1994 and was director of Kentucky's summer tennis camp in 1993 and 1994. He assisted head coach John Dineen, helped train and prepare the student-athletes, and traveled with the team. Kentucky finished the 1994 season ranked No. 11 in the country.

Prior to starting his coaching career, Campos was a tennis touring professional from June 1992-May 1993. He played No. 1 singles for Tennessee Tech before beginning his professional career.

Campos received a bachelor of business administration degree in marketing from Tennessee Tech in 1992 and earned an MBA from the school in 1997.
