Lamar Turns in Several Good Performances at LSU Purple Tiger Indoor Meet

BATON ROUGE - The Lamar men's and women's track and field teams opened the indoor season with several good performances at the season-opening LSU Purple Tiger Indoor Meet at the LSU Field House.

Freshman Renee Graham turned in the only individual win for Lamar, winning the women's 3000-meters in a time of 10:18.56. Sarah Weir placed fifth in the event for the Lady Cardinals in 10:42.33 and Amanda King was seventh at 11:01.93.

The Lady Cardinals placed second in the distance medley relay. Host LSU won the event in a time of 11:51.38. Lamar finished second at 12:22.24 with Toni Sylvester the 400 meters, Amber Prather the 800 meters, Clerk Koenck the 1200 meters, and Jacqueline John the 1600 meters.

Koenck, a freshman from Anacoco, La., also placed second in the 1-mile run in a time of 5:17.49. John was fourth (5:27.83) and Ashley Moss placed 10th (5:45.34). McNeese State's Ruth Waller won the race in a time of 5:10.53.
 

 

Also performing well for the Lady Cardinals was Chinelo Nwobu, who placed 11th in the 200 meters (26.23). Jessika Johnson placed 10th in the 60 meter hurdles (9.27) and Kim Ballenger was 12th (9.36). LSU's RaNysha LeBlanc, a Port Arthur native, won the event in a time of 9.27.

Freshman Tamia Washington placed seventh in the long jump at 17-00 ½ and Rachel Ince was 13th at 16-3 ¼. Nederland's Natasha Williams was second in the 5,000 meters in a time of 19:16.47. Senior Candace Taylor was sixth in the 800 meters in a time of 2:23.34. The Lady Cardinals 4x400 meter relay team (Nwobu, Johnson, Prather, Sylvester) placed seventh at 4:02.72.

Lamar's men's team also turned in some solid performances. Junior Damien Broomes finished fourth in the 400 meters in a time of 51.06. Phillip Thornton was sixth at 51.81. Terry Estwick of Jackson State won the event with a 50.12 clocking.

Freshman Quincy Parker placed 13th in the 200 meters in a time of 23.19 and junior Jeremy Norris was 19th at 23.37. Senior Jason Ramsey finished 15th in the 60 meter hurdles with an 8.62 clocking. The Cardinals 4x400 meter relay team (Thornton, Parker, Broomes, Stephen Boone) placed seventh in a time of 3:26.08.

Sophomore Hamish Meacheam finished fifth in the 5,000 meters with a 15:43.00 clocking. Sophomore Ben McBride was ninth (16:25.54) and junior Travis Tolbert was 11th (16:35.17). Junior Jake Champagne finished fifth in the 1-mile run (4:23.16) and sophomore Danny Shaw was seventh (4:25.28).

Lamar continues its indoor schedule Friday at the Leonard Hilton Invitational in Houston.
