Lamar Tennis to Have Busy Weekend at Cardinal Courts
March 31, 2006 BEAUMONT - The Lamar University women's and men's tennis teams will hit the Cardinal Courts for the final time this season, with the women facing UT San Antonio on Saturday and Texas State University on Sunday and the men taking on Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Saturday. All three of the weekend matches are slated to begin at 10 a.m. The Lady Cardinals, who enter the weekend with a 3-1 Southland Conference record, are being led by the No. 1 duo of Andrea Martinez and Tara Shelander who have are posting a 13-1 record for the year. Also contributing to the Lady Cardinals success is the doubles tandem of Kendall Gibbs and Maria Guiterrez who have posted an 8-5 record for the year. In singles play, Andrea Martinez has posted a 9-3 season record and a 3-1 record in SLC play in the number one spot. Gutierrez has also been strong, posting an identical 9-3 record and 3-1 conference record, while Pamela Martinez has gone 8-5 and 3-1 in SLC play. The Cardinal men will be take on the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders in their final Southland Conference Match of the 2006 season, while looking snap an eight match losing streak The Cards are led by sophomore Filip Kanczula who was awarded Southland Conference Player of the Week honors last week after picking up a pair of SLC victories. He is 4-1 in conference play. After this weekend the men will be in action in their last match before the Southland Tournament, next Saturday against Rice University. Next weekend the Lady Cards will hit the road to face Sam Houston State and Texas Arlington on Saturday and Sunday with both matches slated to begin at 10 a.m.
